Whakapapa in Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand

Painted in 1988

Often a northern-hemisphere-centric view of skiing tends to discount our southern counterparts, in places like Australia and New Zealand, but that’s a grave mistake to make. Whakapapa is a prime example. Located on Mount Ruapehu, Whakapapa has everything a skier needs to enjoy themselves during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter season which usually runs through November. Whakapapa is one of the crown jewels of skiing on New Zealand’s North Island. With over 1,300 acres of skiing and 67 named runs, Whakapapa has something for everyone. And a gondola, five chairlifts, and six surface lifts make getting around the mountain easy.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The legendary James Niehues

If you are a skier or snowboarder, there is a good chance James Niehues has been your mountain guide. Throughout his 30 year career he has worked at the  smallest hills and the most expansive resorts in North America. He has left his mark in South America, Australia, Asia and Europe too. And even if you have never shared a bottomless powder day with him, he has always been close by.
