Artwork backstory

Breckenridge Mountain & Street Scene in Breckenridge, Colorado

Painted >in 1989 for Snow Country Magazine

While ski hills are generally the focus of James Niehues’ work, he often branched out and painted more localized scenes that do more to capture the spirit of a place than just presenting a ski map. That’s the case with this 1989 painting of downtown Breckenridge, backdropped by the ski area that he painted for Snow Country Magazine in 1989. His exactingly geographic style is just as evident here as in his maps, every tree on every run in the background is rendered in perfect detail. But in the foreground is the historic downtown of Breckenridge, one of the ski town capitals of the world. You can see the historic businesses and storefronts of the 80s, as well as period-appropriate cars driving the streets.
