The cover of The Man Behind The Maps features a detailed pencil sketch of Big Sky Resort, Montana. A pencil sketch is Niehues' last step before he begins his color painting.
“Big Sky seemed a natural fit to grace the cover,” said Niehues. “Lone Peak is truly an iconic mountain, one that immediately demands your full attention upon turning into Gallatin Canyon Basin. The classic lines from its summit – the Big Couloir, Dictator Chutes and North Snowfields – are both aesthetically beautiful as well as well-deserving of their double black diamond status. The mile-long runs and gladed lodgepole forests seem to go on forever, definitely one of my best.”
