Niagara Falls

This sketch of Niagara Falls is part of that James Niehues’s collection of art pieces depicting great American landmarks. It captures the falls from a strategic vantage point that puts their massive size and power into perspective. Niagra falls is the largest waterfall in North America, and the second largest on earth, and Niehues captured that size perfectly here. At over a thousand feet wide, and nearly two hundred feet tall, they’re big, beautiful, and intimidating. While some artists just do a hasty sketch before they start painting, Niehues’s sketches were just as accurate and exacting as his paintings. He used them to figure out every aspect of composition, value, and detail before he started moving pigment around. That means this “sketch” is just as masterfully crafted as the rest of his work.

If you’re local to Niagara Falls, or you’re just a fan of the geographical phenomena that make this country so beautiful, you’ll appreciate this depiction of America’s most famous waterfall and the time and dedication that went into creating it. This sketch captures the might of one of America’s fondest attractions
