Artwork backstory

Reno and Lake Tahoe Area Ski Resorts, Nevada and California

Painted in 2003

Lake Tahoe is the legendary home of several of the best ski resorts in the world, and this painting by James Niehues captures them all, from a Nevada-centric perspective. It also does a great job of projecting the scale of Lake Tahoe, and the mountains that surround it. This is truly a geographical wonder that’s especially suited to skiers and snowboarders. And it’s all on display here, from the streets of Reno, up to Incline Village, beautifully situated right on the lake. The Lake Tahoe Basin is home to some of the most iconic ski areas and mountains in the world, and what makes it so special is their close proximity to one another. It’s an unprecedented concentration of incredible skiing that this map manages to capture perfectly from a unique perspective.
