Solitude Mountain Resort in Solitude, Utah
Painted in 2015
While Utah’s Little Cottonwood Canyon often gets all the hype, it’s foolish to discount the resorts located in neighboring Big Cottonwood Canyon. The BCC as it’s often called is home to a couple of remarkable ski areas, and not least among them is Solitude. Located conveniently near Salt Lake City, Solitude boasts 500 inches of natural snow per year, plenty of varied terrain from mellow groomers to challenging chutes, and the acreage and infrastructure to make anyone’s ski vacation dreams a reality. Solitude’s eight chairlifts serve nearly 2,500 vertical feet of skiing, spread out over 1,200 acres.

The legendary James Niehues
If you are a skier or snowboarder, there is a good chance James Niehues has been your mountain guide. Throughout his 30 year career he has worked at the smallest hills and the most expansive resorts in North America. He has left his mark in South America, Australia, Asia and Europe too. And even if you have never shared a bottomless powder day with him, he has always been close by.
